Brooklyn Boulders
i recently found out about this mega-gym being built in brooklyn: http://www.brooklynboulders.com/index.html
anyone have any info? it's supposed to be huge, i hear ivan greene is attached to it, all the regular stuff, but any ideas if it'll be affordable or not? i know c.c.c. is closing come july which will probably boost mphc memberships, but will brooklyn boulders be another chelsea piers? thoughts?
there's more info on the website now. new memberships are around $600 if ordered now through the website and $700 if purchased on site. there's also something for life--you get to climb for as long as you live (and as long as they keep the lease) for 5k, 6k, or 7k depending.
It's a little on the expensive side, but then again, the $7000 lifetime membership is *transferable,* one transfer per day, it says. So find someone who will go on the off days, and if you live in Brooklyn it just might be worth it.
The pics of the place look like it's going to be a killer space. I'm a cheapskate and I live in Inwood, kinda far from Brooklyn, so I just might do outdoor bouldering and wait it out until CCC re-opens in the newly-renovated Parks and Rec building.
Here's hoping some stimulus money will speed up the renovation there!

So, its not open yet, but someone rated it-with one star? If you have a grudge, at least say what it is, or keep the rating in your own mind.
wow defensive.....sounds like an employee!
No, I'm not an employee.
Rating anything before it's open (especially with a slam) is absurd. I could have just popped in a '5', but that would be equally stupid, since I know nothing at all about the gym except whats on their webpage.I would like the ratings to means something. I do look forward to people who have been there giving their opinions.
Even if one knows for a fact that one aspect of an organization is poor, its pretty unbalanced and unfair to give it an overall poor rating based on that alone. It was obviously a grudge or hack job of some kind. I find it veeery interesting that a person could anonymously make that kind of jab and it goes unquestioned, yet someone pointing it out is assumed to be defensive/an employee/be a personal protector. I supposed that is the nature of web forums; as some political commentator put it "pimpled teenagers typing in the basement".
But hey-Charlos, if it was you, what's your grudge? A Brooklyn gym sounds like a good idea to me. If you have some constructive criticism for them, pass it on. Every gym has strengths and weaknesses, if they have a problem the time to address it is before they open their doors. Or they may deem it utterly and totally irrelevant.
The only grudges i carry here are for those who post as climbers propping up gyms they actually work for, own, etc instead of supporting the site by PAYING for advertising space. There is a history of that here.
Your grudge is legitimate. My comment regarded the parallel; it seemed someone had rated BB without a basis or helpful comment.(I would feel the same way about a '5'vote that appeared for a gym still being finished) An active site with meaningful activity/information is one that grows membership and attracts advertisers.
I'll reset the votes on BB when it is open to the public. Unfortunately the way I built the site there is no way for me to disable voting on an individual gym, however I felt that the value of having the info available outweighed the issues of people making baseless ratings.
Voting stuff up and down for commercial reasons is a problem throughout the internet unfortunately, and I think most people are wise enough to take ratings with a pinch of salt.
Thanks to all the users of climbnyc.com who take the time to write thoughtful and useful reviews!
Steve from Brooklyn Boulders here, thank you so much for all who are taking interest in our project. Let me start by saying, this is the absolute first time I have read, let alone posted on this forum.
In regard to someone voting only 1 star for BKB, I hope they have at least seen the recent pictures on the gallery of the website, been to a T-nut Partay, or at least been by for a tour. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we know that we will not be able to make every climber in the city 100% happy. However, we are hoping to take care of the vast majority of them.
And for those of you who continue to drink the BKB flavored HATERade, we will miss you at all of the sick climbing sessions!
Tom, if you feel the need to reset the votes, fine by BKB.
For those of you who are sticking up for BKB on this forum (and no, they are not employees, we have none). Holla at me, you are getting HOOKED UP!
BKB will offer a climbing experience that is different from the current climbing options in NYC. We will have hands down the most amount of climbable terrain in NYC and encourage climbers from the other facilities to come check us out when the routes at their current climbing wall get old.
If you are curious, our official stance on the other climbing walls in NYC is: What is good for climbing, is good for us.
And feel free to keep up the discussion on if you guys think we are going to stink or not. We love it.
i started this thread mostly to suss out if the vibe would be chill or not. i've never been to chelsea piers but i've heard many a complaint over praise from most people who've gone. figuring that similar people who've worked there would be working at bkb, i wondered if the same cause for complaint would make its way to brooklyn. i got down with c.c.c. mostly because i felt like i could climb in peace; mphc is an okay place to climb but too sausage-y for my tastes; chelsea too expensive; new rochelle is by far the best but also too far for me. i'm relocating to brooklyn soon and will throw down for the membership after my next check even though i'm worried that there will be an elitist vibe, a clique type feel. i'd rather not feel like my climbing skills are being scrutinized. i guess that's climbing insecurity talking.
but whatever it's going to be like, you supply the place to feed my jones and i'll pay to get my fix. i hope this place rocks house. here's to having more places to climb indoors!
(and for the record: i didn't rate the gym.)
I just plopped down serious cash for an annual membership. This place better be good.
Hello everybody! I am the other proud owner of BKB. I also never commented before this! As to the star system, it certainly holds value although I do have to agree, it is difficult to rate something that isn't yet operating! But that is beyond the point, I was more interested to respond to "uptown212."
We've begun discussing hiring positions with certain folks and thus far none are from Chelsea Piers (not to say they aren't chill, but just stating a fact). We really are trying to create a chill atmosphere. I've been a climber for over 6 years now and I am the happiest when I am outside climbing in the middle of the forest. The last flavor I want to bring to BKB is that of an elitist vibe, etc... So we will have beginner areas as well as advanced areas, which should hopefully help those who aren't as strong as others and who want to do their own thing without being judged. Furthermore, our prices are more reasonable than that of CP, so this may help as well for those who get that vibe. In the end, since we're solely a climbing facility, the majority of customers should be those dedicated to the sport or with a certain level of interest. It is impossible to completely eliminate some level of competition based on strength and ability to climb "hard stuff," but a healthy dose of competition can be a good motivator. Finally, we will try our hardest to listen to the people that matter - you. So please tell us what you think.
I hope this helps. But please, don't hesitate to make other comments or ask questions as I would be more than happy to shed some light on the type of place we're looking to create.
And in response to Martin, first of all, thank you! And second of all, I don't think you'll be disappointed. This place is going to be pretty sick. Crazy tall boulders, short awesome boulders, roofs, small inclines, big inclines, and the list of cool features goes on. The ropes will also be nice - lead and TR. Our tallest walls are a little over 30ft, which should lend themselves nicely to 40ft routes when you include the incline. We also have an awesome lead roof and a stalactite. Cool! And obviously there are plenty of easier walls for those who are new to the sport or those who climb less than others.
I hope all this helps. Let me know. Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated. And see you all soon!

cool man. really looking forward to seeing how things turn out. i appreciate you taking the time to address my initial concerns and expect me to come in to climb as soon as it's possible--because really, that's all i want to do.
I was there tonight, and this place is going to be sick. Looks like the bouldering area is almost done, besides the matts and pads. A long way to go for the TR. :( Much bigger than what I expected. I mainly climb and the TR walls are a decent height. Hopefully they will have another opeing for FA members soon!
i just saw a quick piece on new york 1 about this place. seems like it's going to do well. props. good luck. (just lost my job so there goes a membership!)
I was there last night and the place looks like it will have some great stuff there. There is only one wall with about 5-6 ropes open right now, but there is some pretty good bouldering available in the other rooms. I'm looking forward to going back when it opens in Sept.
NYC was long due for a rockclimbing gym that caters to the non-meat head climbing community. Unlike most rockclimbing gyms in NYC, the front desk staff are friendly, helpful, and easy going. I had membership at Berkeley Ironworks for 3 years before moving to NYC and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of climbers that I ran into that used to climb in Berkeley, CA. In addition, Brooklyn Boulders is very reminiscent of Berkeley Ironworks with their style of route-setting and wall design. I especially enjoyed the bouldering area and ghetto warehouse look of the place.
The downside of Brooklyn Boulders is that there are no locker rooms - only male/female restrooms and cubbies to store your items. Also the gym tends to get crowded on weekend afternoons (especially with children) where you have to wait your turn. Other than that, this rockclimbing gym is the best thing to happen to NYC.
Thanks, military night vision goggles
Cool problems, interesting angles, easy access from Bklyn or Manhtn. Right now they are NYC #1.
Until chelsea piers rebuilt bouldering area.:D
