Number of cimbers in NYC?

By chuck c - Posted on 16 February 2009

Does anyone have a general guess on how many climbers there are living in the 5 boroughs?
peace,

hard to know, but about 90 people showed up for the bouldering comp at mphc, and i have a feeling there are many more climbers throughout the city

Many, many thousands, for sure, but it depends on how you define "climbers." And you'll never see them in the same place. There are people that only boulder, others that only climb outside, others that are gym rats, etc. Also lots of people that used to climb someplace else (e.g., college in Boulder) but gave it up for whatever reason - kids, spouse, NYC gyms too constraining, getting to the gunks is too much of a bother, etc.

thanks for the comments guys. The reason I ask is because a friend and I have been talking about starting up a climbing gym, but with real estate so high and start up cost, we figured it would take us 45 climbers a day at $15-18 dollars a pop just to scrape by and that's doing it ourselves and maybe one employee.

If you are serious about starting a gym/business, you will have to be a lot more professional and exact about your research than posting on a web forum. eg: American Sports Data estimates that there are 0.3 frequent participants (those who climb 25+ days a year) per 100 people. Rock and Ice says that 30% of all climbers have a gym membership where there is a gym to join.

So, what is your population (that would travel to the gym)? How many nonclimbers could you turn into gym rats? Do some research. Get info from circulation departments, access the Sports Data Institute, make a business plan from Rockwerx...here is one website to get you started:

Good Luck.

Thanks for the link. I will definitely check it out.

Admittedly I know little to nothing about this and am kind-of feeling my way around in the dark. A couple of things I do know is that I love to climb and want share that (and I think I might be a gym rat.) But at the moment it’s just a pipe dream.

The other side of the coin is that I don't want to hurt the established gyms already in the area namely, MPHC and New Rochelle and if there aren't enough people here to sustain another gym then I don't think it's worth it.

Peace and thanks again
