Creating the Outdoor Climbing section

So far the leader in the poll for what to create next is the Outdoor Climbing section.

So... how should I do this? Please add a comment with your thoughts and suggestions.

Should bouldering and trad climbing be completely separate, or should they have the same info but just tagged as one or the other?

What information should be included for each? My initial thoughts are:
- Name of rock/section of cliff
- Photo of the rock with lines for the routes on it
- Location (latitude & longitude)
- Area (chosen from a list - e.g. Gunks, Peterskills, Central Park, Inwood, etc.)
- Directions on how to get there

For each route on that rock/section of cliff
- Name
- Difficulty
- Description
- Photos
- Videos
- First climbed by?
- and for trad routes (not bouldering)
- height
- number of pitches
- exposure

My plan is to do this as a wiki (where any registered user can add/edit the details).

Comments can be added to each route as well.

Outdoor climbing section

Tom,

I think you should consider keeping this simple as first. There is plenty information on Gunks/Peter's Kill in guidebooks and online for free already. Unfortunately, there is very little information on bouldering/climbing closer to the City. When NYClimb.com was online, a great idea was floated around....basically, the guy created a google map that stuck virtual pins where all of the boulders in the City were located. I would assume that there is some way to do this in a wiki that would allow different people to add different boulders. Once people know where the boulders are, we can upload photos with route lines/descriptions. Locations, photos and routes descriptions are all we really need anyway, right?

I think that this would help people find available climbing outside of the ever popular and crowded Rat/Cat Rock, and maybe even some buildering opportunities (bridges in Astoria Park?). Hopefully, the areas covered will expand to include rock outside of city limits (Long Island beach boulders), but there is plenty within it the City (Van Cortland Park) that would be new to the online community.

Thanks again for organizing this site!

I think elwood54 makes a good suggestion. Since this is a NYC-focused site, it makes the most sense to first build out the information for local climbing spots first, then add details for spots out of town. Your "initial thoughts" list looks solid to me. The additional details you mention would be nice to have, but for me personally, the most important information is accurate descriptions of exactly where the climbs are, and how to get to them. Obviously, pictures and accurate Google maps help with this.

On that note, I live a few blocks south of Ft. Tryon park, and would be happy to meet up with someone to start mapping out the climbable features in the area, as well as in Inwood Hill Park a little to the north. For example, there is a rather obvious overhanging promontory in the woods in Ft. Tryon that often has chalk marks on it. Someone who is a better boulderer than I am could help figure out what the problems and their ratings are, since to me they're all frickin hard.

Thanks for the comments

Thanks for the comments - I'll make a start...

Added

I've added the climbing section now. Pretty basic, but it's a start. Add your suggested improvements here!
