Traveling with Crash Pads

I'm heading to the British Virgin Islands in a couple weeks and am planning on doing some bouldering. I'm wondering if anyone has ever traveled by plane with their crash pad? Obviously I'll have to check it as luggage, but do I cover it with something for protection? What's the best way to do this?
