Teach Me Mastas: Just Getting Started.

Experience: Ropes courses and basic climbing walls back in boy scouts (over 10 years ago).

Im 29. I live in the Bronx but enjoy running subway lines all over the city. Tonight's initial research has all fingers pointing to Brooklyn Boulders.

I'm a video editor and social media guy - so Im getting way too much computer time, and a once "lanky" runner is having a hard time getting motivated to get to the gym. Time to inject a sense of adventure, community, joy, and zen back into taking care of myself. Plus: I love nature, I love rocks, boulders, sky, trust, and evolution. A lot of people are suggesting climbing.

First step, try a wall in the city.

Concerns: my knees ain't so hot. running and a few minor injuries have made them less than a 100% .. can i train through that? suggestions? advice?

And beyond that I just wanted to open up a thread about getting started here in the city.. do's/ dont's, etiquette, warnings, cross-training, diet, best ways to ramp up and get started, when to start buying gear vs. renting, etc.

I hope to be out on real rock sometime in the early summer, I head up the Hudson for work fairly often.

Looking forward to hearing your wisdom,
stefan (sedgewick)

Is he the Guru as far as training? Any other recommendations?

'Beyond Gravity'

A good overview it seems of the different climbing styles too.

I've been climbing for a few months and by no means a master but I'd say head into central park and hit rat rock, see how it feels. Try to get a partner but theres usually people there. If you haven't gotten any gear I'd say just buy shoes and a chalk bag. Some would probably say just get shoes but chalk definitely helps. Hope this helps!
