They say: New Yorkers choose the MPHC Climbing gym for its outstanding safety record, experienced staff, and the friendly community of climbers it provides.
Manhattan Plaza has some good top-roping with plenty of people to teach new climbers. But one of the main attractions is their large bouldering room, which is a great place to go if you don't have a climbing partner. People are pretty friendly and it's rarely over-crowded. There's usually a mix of regulars and people new to the city or new to climbing.
MPHC provides :
-16 top rope stations with over 60 routes
-Over 100 boulder problems
-40ft lead roof with a high degree of difficulty
-New routes and boulder problems every week.

Ok- here's the deal- the people at the MPHC climbing gym are smart and condescenting, they are helpful and aloof.
What I mean is they know what they are doing- clearly they live and breath climbing. But they are a bunch of rock jocks who also have an attitude about it, like they would rather be somewhere else, like in the bouldering room with their buddies.
The way they charge for things is completely arbitrary- I can't figure when you need to have a $60 intro, or when they will just belay test you and let you climb- my brother is convinced that every time they say, "I can make you a deal" that half the money goes in their pockets.
So- do I recommend it? Yes. But only begrudgingly. Make sure you call first/the day before to see if they are crowded or if they will be closed for some arbitrary arcane reason, which they do.
Thanks for the feedback.
I will address two specific comments;
1) "I can't figure when you need to have a $60 intro, or when they will just belay test you and let you climb".
If it's your first time to our gym you will get a belay test. If it's your first time climbing or you fail the belay test you must take the $60 orientation. Safety is our biggest priority!
2) I'd like to bite my tongue here but I must address the "make a deal" comment. Our staff is professional not only behind a belay device but also behind the counter. The only thing they are guilty of is excellent customer service.
Thanks again for your honest feedback. We look forward to climbing with you.

I’ve only climbed there once and it was only my 3rd time to boulder, so take it with a grain of salt. Some enjoyable routes (v2’s & v3’s for me) and the people seemed nice enough. I was there on a Wednesday night from 4—7 and by 7 it was starting to get a little crowed. I would have loved it if it was $10 but I just didn’t have a $20 experience.
