Expressway cliffs
Location(s)
30-40 ft cliffs overlooking Trans-Manhattan Expressway, lots of potential. Entry to the top of the cliff can be made via small boulder and fence at 178th St. and Amsterdam Ave. (the wall just north offers a good vantage of the site). Trees and fence offer potential top roping site. Access the bottom of the cliff by following the path adjacent to the exit ramp, enter at 175th and Amsterdam and cross just before freeway. Landing is a large concrete area with dirt/grass edge.

hey monk have you visited during the winter?
any ice there?
has anyone actually climbed it. if so did you tr it or lead? and should i bring a piece that area is rather sketch
Does anyone know who controls the area and what the response would be to developing the cliff? (ie: bolting routes, I can't see a bunch of trad potential here.)
Sure would be nice to have some lead climbing in Manhattan, and it looks like there's potential here.
So a friend corrected me by telling me that the agreement is that you can climb in Manhattan so long as you don't leave a trace (or something of that nature), so I guess it's top roping or you find a place to fit a nut. I'd never heard of such an agreement, is it listed somewhere in writing? If so, could someone point me to it?
