Down-time

Sorry for the down-time folks - I'm still getting new to managing this new website, and I messed up... Nothing lost though!

No camping at Tuthilltown this season

Got this message from Ralph at Tuthilltown today:

We'd appreciate if you would notify all members that we are NOT offering camping at TUTHILLTOWN this season, at least not till after July. We are just too busy and too much going on just now to accommodate climber traffic. And no toilet facilities available just now. Our apologies and looking forward to the return of our climber friends to Tuthilltown. We will post you and GUNKS.COM when we are ready to welcome climbers again. Thanks.

Ralph

Rating difficulty of climbs on ClimbNYC

How should we rate the difficulty of climbs on the website?

When someone adds/edits a climb, they should be able to select a difficulty from a list. This means that people can search for climbs based on a difficulty.

For example I'm climbing at around 5.9, so I can search for all climbs rated 5.9 within 1 mile of zipcode 10031.

So - what rating system should we use?

The primary focus of the climbing section at the moment is bouldering, so it would make sense to use that. However people will be adding trad routes too, and may be more comfortable grading based on that.

Creating the Outdoor Climbing section

So far the leader in the poll for what to create next is the Outdoor Climbing section.

So... how should I do this? Please add a comment with your thoughts and suggestions.

Should bouldering and trad climbing be completely separate, or should they have the same info but just tagged as one or the other?

What information should be included for each? My initial thoughts are:
- Name of rock/section of cliff
- Photo of the rock with lines for the routes on it
- Location (latitude & longitude)
- Area (chosen from a list - e.g. Gunks, Peterskills, Central Park, Inwood, etc.)

Logo Competition

We need a logo for ClimbNYC!

There's no particular guidelines, there's not even any color scheme. We'll fit the color scheme of the site around the winning logo.

To post your entry, upload your design to whichever photo website you like to use (e.g. Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket, etc). Log in here, then click the 'Photo' link in the 'Create Content' menu on the left (http://www.climbnyc.com/node/add/photo).

To look at people's entries, vote, and comment, go to http://www.climbnyc.com/node/add/photo

ClimbNYC is reborn!

After a year or so out of action, ClimbNYC.com is back. The old forum got overwhelmed with spam, so we've started from scratch with a new Drupal-based site.

The main person doing this at the moment is Thomas Turnbull - a climber and web developer. But we need help! We're going to have a logo competition soon, so if you're a designer get thinking about that. If you happen to be a web developer, especially if you've had experience with Drupal, please get in touch! And most importantly we need people to get involved and contribute!

Joining is easy - just choose a username, put in your email address and choose a password. Then you can search for a ride to the cliffs or offer a ride if you've got space. We're redoing our Climbing Gym list, so you can add to that too. Everyone can blog here, and soon we'll be setting things up so that you can add photos and videos too.

Other planned features include a climbing partner search, newsletter and regular competitions. If you're interested in providing prizes for the competitions, please get in touch!
